Student of the Month: June 2026 Edition
Mabel Bova
Mabel Bova is an exceptional voice student here at Rock 101! She loves working with her instructor, Adam Hooks, as he encourages not only great vocal technique and practice but also her passion for rock music and the artists she really enjoys! Her voice teachers prior to Adam were focused on classical repertoire and techniques, which she felt were important to learn, but also prevented her from pursuing her interests as a vocalist! Adam blends together a focus on proper vocal technique and an understanding of vocal health while maintaining an emphasis on exploration of genre and differing musical perspectives.
Mabel’s favorite song is “Growing Up” by The Linda Lindas. She feels as though the song reflects her life, how she is growing up, life is changing, and how time shifts. She is inspired by this song and sang it last year for her school's talent show!
Mabel is not only an individual student at Rock 101 but also a member of Band League, a program that allows her to continue focusing on technique, stage presence, and collaboration with other musicians! She enjoys Band League because it gives her the opportunity to express herself and practice in a different setting, further developing her technique and vocal energy. Mabel was a recipient of an individual award given to students in Band League who exemplified the Four C’s: Commitment, Collaboration, Confidence, and Creativity throughout the season. This award reflects Mabel’s presence and dedication to Band League and her own work in private lessons with Adam.
Adam has shared that Mabel ALWAYS shows up with enthusiasm and is ready to get to work learning new skills. Besides being a good Rock vocalist, he expresses how she’s a talented and inspiring songwriter who applies her vocal talents to songs of her own creation! It is clear to him that she puts into practice time outside of their lessons, and has an open ear for constructive criticism and feedback. Adam’s favorite part about teaching Mabel is helping her find her own voice, both with songs of her own creation and her favorite songs written by others. Being even a small part of Mabel’s development into a kick butt front person and lead singer is a beautiful and humbling experience, which he is incredibly proud of. Lastly, he expresses how INSANELY smart and insightful she is, especially with her original lyrics!
