Kevin Herig // Founder | Director | Instructor
Kevin has been deeply rooted in the Albuquerque music community for nearly a decade, educating aspiring musicians as well as writing and performing his own music. He has released 4 studio albums, the most recent of which, "All You Can't Control", released on March 25th of 2016.
Kevin has a passion and a knack for bringing together people in community, and common purpose. He routinely gigs around the southwest, collaborating with a myriad of talented musicians.
Kevin founded Rock 101 Summer Sessions in 2011, shortly after finishing his business degree at UNM. He has a solid understanding of professional musicianship, and he expects to bring out the best in his students and fellow instructors.
Kyle Ruggles // Vocals | Guitar | Bass
Kyle studied music education at Scottsdale Community College, and student taught under Erica Costello at Cleveland Middle School in 2007. Kyle has been teaching private piano, voice, bass and guitar lessons for several years, and has been a part of the Rock 101 instructor team since 2011.
Kenny Broyles // Percussion | Ukulele | Guitar | Bass
Kenny has studied music theory and composition for three years at UNM, and sang bass in the UNM Dolce Suono choir. He has been playing drums for twelve years and ukulele for nine years. He likes collaborating with friends and local musicians, and has experience in folk, jazz, rock, rap, electronic music, and more. He is currently a member of the local bands Eileen & the In-Betweens, Brush Strokes, and Ugly Robot, with whom he is honing his songwriting and showmanship abilities.
Alex McMahon // Guitar | Bass | Mandolin | Slide Guitar
Alex is a multi-instrumentalist with over 20 years experience primarily playing guitar. Since the age of 18 he has been playing music professionally both in bands as well as a contracted session musician in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. In addition to the guitar, he also plays dobro, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, banjo, piano and organ. Currently Alex is in the trio Wildewood, in which he plays a myriad of instruments and contributes with songwriting, singing and recording production. Some of Alex’s biggest influences include Marc Ribot, Eric Heywood, Brett Davis (of “The Mighty Saltlicks”), David Byrne and Howe Gelb.
Jared Putnam // Bass
Jared Putnam has lived in Albuquerque since 1989. When he is not happily slapping his bass with Le Chat Lunatique, you might find him: Playing songs/making videos/writing songs for, Sage and Jared’s Happy Gland Band, teaching kids music at Rock 101, juggling, putting food into containers at a grocery store, or waxing his mustache. Here are some things Jared used to do: Study music at UNM. Listen to nothing but Death Metal. Play music with Hector Pimentel, Syd Masters, Lynn Anderson (sometimes he still plays with Syd Masters). Live in New York, Iowa and California. Try growing a mustache. Fun Facts about Jared: His dad was the Art Director of MAD Magazine. His dad’s mother’s husband’s brother’s wife was Amelia Earhart. His dad’s mother wrote, “The Mummy” which starred Boris Karloff. Jared has been to all of these countries: Germany, Japan, India, Egypt, Lebanon, Chile, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Serbia, England, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
Greg Williams // Percussion | Harmonica | Beginner Piano
Greg has been a percussionist in Albuquerque for the past 16 years. He participated in various concert bands, jazz bands, and marching bands in high school. In addition to the drums, Greg picked up the harmonica five years ago. He graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Audio Engineering and Technology. Greg was the drummer, harmonica player, and recording engineer for local trio, Wildewood. Greg currently plays with Le Chat Lunatique, Free Fall, and an assortment of local songwriters. Some of Greg's biggest influences include the drummers Brian Blade, Jay Bellerose, and harmonica players Sonny Boy Williamson, and Junior Wells.
Emmanuel Catanzariti // Piano / Guitar / Vocal
Emmanuel graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans where he studied Jazz Piano Performance and Music Industry studying under Larry Sieberth, John Mahoney, and Ray Moore. He is an active member of the local music scene, working as a both a session musician and frontman for many recordings, as well as live performances. His piano and guitar playing have been featured in Jazz, Contemporary, and even Electro-Acoustic Ensembles. On the industry side of the Music Business, Emmanuel has worked in Artist Relations and Production Coordination for events such as the Gretna Heritage and Arts Festival, Jazzfest, Voodoofest, Buku, in addition to many others.
His curriculum utilizes a balance of music theory, repertoire construction, and improvisational technique to develop each individual’s love and knowledge of all genres of music. Emmanuel works to ensure that students are engaged by learning songs within their musical tastes, whilst still earning the essentials of music theory. Emmanuel’s strong background in Jazz and Blues Rock performance in addition to Festival and Event Production brings a unique element to Rock 101 NM.
Sage Harrington // Ukulele | Vocals | Violin
Sage Harrington is an extremely talented local songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She cultivates an upbeat and supportive atmosphere where students of all ages can learn essential technique and build performance skills. Along with directing our Ukulele Club, Sage teaches private music lessons on the ukulele, violin, and voice.
Issac Trujillo // Guitar
Issac has had a fascination with music his entire life. He has been studying music formally since 4th grade and holds a Bachelors Degree in Music education and a Masters in Music Theory & Composition. Issac has been teaching music lessons for over 5 years and has been a member of the Rock 101 crew since 2012. Issac is an active local musician who is currently a member of Metal and Country bands in the Albuquerque area. Along with playing, Issac also has a passion for recording music. He believes that a well rounded teacher/performer should always strive to improve and expand as a musician.
Shaun Hettinger // Piano | Vocals
After 17 years of playing keys & often singing lead vocals in NYC and LA bands, Shaun relocated to Albuquerque in 2016 where he spends most of his time composing & producing music for film and tv projects - including the Netflix, Chelsea Handler theme.
Still releasing original electro-pop music under the name MEMORYY, Shaun won the New Mexico Music Award for “Best Pop Album” in 2017, has garnered press from the likes of NYLON & The Huffington Post, and his most recent album debuted at #62 on iTunes’ Dance Chart.
When not writing or playing music, Shaun enjoys consuming large quantities of mint chocolate chip ice cream, playing with his 1 year old son & cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles.
Wyatt Granger // Bass | Guitar | Vocals | Piano
Wyatt is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, philosopher, and madman who has been active musically for over a decade when he first picked up Bass at the age of 14. Since he first started playing, Wyatt has been apart of over 10 bands, featured on a variety of recordings as a "hired gun", and has released multiple albums and EPs. Currently he is in the hard rock duo MountainHead, the songwriter project Rue Badly, and is the bassist for indie-soul group Eugene.
He graduated at UNM where he studied Music Composition and Theory under Composers Karola Obermuller and Peter Gilbert, as well as studying Songwriting under Kristina Jacobson-Bia and David Bashwiner (of Cactus Tractor fame). Wyatt's approach to teaching includes the philosophy of music, developing skill sets through a process of flexible repetition, and trying to illuminate meaning in one's life through the artistic process. While just having a ridiculous amount of fun with it, of course.
